Each year brings new hope for new advances in products or technology for better care of our patients.
So far we have a new Skin Booster from Merz. It contains-
new Gel therapy
Hydration is a key feature of a healthy skin and has been widely proven to rejuvenate the skin, giving the skin a more radiant, youthful appearance. Hyaluronic acid is important for cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation and migration of fibroblasts which causes an increased biosynthesis of collagen and other components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Specific CPM technology of the HA will allow better tissue integration.
GLYCEROL
Both found endogenously in the body, Hyaluronic acid in combination with Glycerol, one of the most hydrating substances in the polyalcohol family, creates a lasting moisturising effect on the skin, and promotes water absorption from the dermis to the stratum corneum – providing moisture from the inside out. Studies have also shown glycerol to enhance the potency of hyaluronic acid by strengthening the hyaluronic acid matrix
What are the benefits- increased skin hydration, softness, and pigmentation. These are features to make you look younger without volume changes of your face.
The treatment requires 3-4 sessions, and are spaced apart by 4 weeks.
Next up we have Alastin Skincare. This company was founded in 2015 and is one of the fastest-growing Physician-dispensed skin care companies. The unique aspect of this skin care is the science, and also how it is used and when it can be used.
Headed by Prof Alan Widgerow, a Plastic Surgeon from WITS, now a research scientist at UCI, he heads a team looking at skin science and products. As discussed with with Dr Young, they discussed the Plastic Surgery team at Johannesburg General, and how many of the departments had emigrated overseas. When Dr Young was a medical student in the 90s, the then head of the Department was Dr Colin Song, who is now in Singapore.
Alastin Skincare has a few aims-
assist recovery of skin after laser or an invasive procedure eg. IPL, Morpheus, liposculpture.
improve the skin bed, naturally improve elastin and collagen
assist the clearance of debris and damaged cells, and re order tissue layers more uniformly.
This skincare should be used pre and post-procedure. ( Something Dr Young has been thinking about for many years).
Polynucleotides, such as Rejuran.
What Can Polynucleotides Be Used For?
Polynucleotide treatments cater to a diverse range of skin issues and conditions, leveraging their unique biological properties for effective results:
Reducing Ageing Signs: These treatments directly target common ageing signs like wrinkles, fine lines, and skin sagging. They stimulate collagen and elastin production, essential for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity.
Enhancing Skin Hydration and Texture:
Polynucleotides significantly boost skin hydration and improve overall texture. They enhance the skin's moisture retention capabilities, resulting in a plumper and smoother appearance.
Promoting Skin Rejuvenation and
Regeneration: The treatments excel in rejuvenating and regenerating skin cells. They are particularly beneficial for skin that has suffered environmental damage, aiding in repair and renewal.
Hair loss.
Hyperpigmentation: Polynucleotides effectively reduce the appearance of scars, including those from acne, and help even out tones.

Each treatment takes 15-25 mins and requires a series of microinjections.
Exosomes On a last note, Prof. Widgerow and Dr Young discussed exosomes.
He said that unfortunately these exosomes are currently not focused enough, and are being used with a hope of something positive occurring on a tissue level. A possible future exosome has these "Fedex" packages with specific messages. These messages need to be specific and then these specific exosomes will then be what we are waiting for.
Dr Young also has Young Hair PODCAST on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
